Passengers have a food bar that decreases with time, and if the meter runs out they start to lose health. You can listen to them to learn more about the story but you will be pressed with time to take care of your other responsibilities. Any passengers you have will sit around and talk. Make sure to search every container for supplies and every room for survivors.
If you get heavily damaged, consider reloading to the last checkpoint to conserve medkits, which are invaluable in the next part. I recommend you conserve your ammo as much as possible and use melee attacks to take out most of the enemies.
